When Should I Seek Emergency Care for My Pet?

Pet emergencies can be stressful and in the moment, it’s not always easy to clearly choose the right course of action. If you’re unsure, call our hospital or one of our referral hospitals for more information. You can also consider the following conditions/scenarios, which are common signs of an emergency:

  • Pet is having trouble breathing
  • Abdomen is distended (bloated) and feels hard to the touch
  • Pet is hemorrhaging or potentially has broken bones and/or internal damage
  • Severe weakness, collapse
  • Unable to stand, walk
  • Seizures
  • Is unable to urinate or pass stool
  • Protracted vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Ingested a known or potentially toxic substance
  • Fell from a high place or suffered a collision with a vehicle
  • Has not eaten or had water in over 24 hours
